Christiana, DE (October 26, 2010) – WFTDA Apprentice League Diamond State Roller Girls (DSRG) eked out a victory over New Jersey’s Shore Points Roller Derby (SPRD) after an exciting double overtime finish on Saturday, October 23rd.
After decisively beating SPRD on their home turf last month, the Boardwalk Brawlers were thirsty for blood in what DSRG billed as their “Skate of the Dead” Halloween bout.
In their first bout on a newly resurfaced wood floor, the hometown crowd got more than their money’s worth as these two closely matched teams battled it out right to the finish. In the first eight jams of the bout, both teams traded leads but always remained within five points of each other. Then, on the 9th jam, SPRD star and team captain Outbreak Meggo turned in a 20 point jam to take a commanding lead.
The glory was short-lived as, by the 12th jam, DSRG had managed to fight back and tie the score again thanks to two strong jams by returning DSRG star Leslie B Gangsta.
Two more strong jams by SPRD skaters Outbreak Meggo and Lady Demeter brought the visiting Boardwalk Brawlers up by nine points at the half. Penalties played a role in the first half as the highly disciplined SPRD skaters spent a total of only three minutes in the penalty box during the entire first half, compared to DSRG’s 17 minutes. The second half saw 11 minutes of SPRD skater time in the box with 12 minutes for DSRG. The home team DSRG skaters came into the second half down 51-60. Even a 15 point jam by DSRG’s hard-hitting Lolli Dagger in the 7th jam of the second half couldn’t make up the deficit as SPRD kept pouring on consistently good numbers and adding to their halftime lead bit by bit. DSRG was still down 73-80 after that terrific 7th jam.
SPRD was able to hold onto their lead right up until the 17th and last jam of regular play when DSRG dug deep and Lolli Dagger turned in an 11 point jam to tie the score at 114 in the final seconds of the bout. With the crowd on their feet, both teams prepared to duel it out in sudden death overtime.
Each team put up its strongest jammer – Outbreak Meggo for SPRD and Lolli Dagger for DSRG. Both very evenly matched, the jammers turned in eight points each.
The bout would go into double overtime. SPRD’s Molly Hatchet, who had turned in big numbers for the Brawlers throughout the entire bout, went up against DSRG star jammer Leslie B Gangsta. On the strength of the amazing blocking and teamwork that both teams had consistently displayed throughout the entire bout, both jammers delivered double digits for their teams as the crowd screamed themselves hoarse.
A hush and then a busy murmur fell over the rink as final scores were tallied, then checked and re-checked. Cheers erupted as the final score showed the hometown DSRG skaters had managed to pull it out and bring home a 139-134 victory.
Both teams celebrated together and already the New Jersey girls are plotting their revenge….
